Visioning
Visioning is simply our term for asking God to reveal His next steps for us. This is not trying to see into the future through the eyes of a fortune teller, but rather asking God to direct our actions along His path for us, by the Holy Spirit. It's actually a lot more like reading a map that God has prepared, sometimes seeing the destination through a telescope.
There are many examples of this in the Bible. In 2 Chronicles 20, Jehoshaphat is facing a crisis and needs to know what to do. A mighty army is approaching, intent on capturing his people and destroying his nation. Rather than gather his experts in military strategy to carefully craft a plan and then consult his political consultants to be sure the people would approve of the action, Jehoshaphat's first decision was to "resolve to inquire of the Lord" (v.3).
He followed a process that is repeated throughout the Bible when he:
Resolved to inquire of the Lord
Prepared to approach God by fasting
Gathered everyone to seek help from God
Led corporate prayer
Acknowledged God as God and humbled himself as Man
Asked for God's direction about a specific circumstance
Received His guidance
Gave corporated thanksgiving to God for His provision
Acted in faith according to God's direction
Other examples of seeking God's direction for future actions include the laying out of fleece (Judges 6:37-40), the lapping of water (Judges 7:1-8), and in perhaps the greatest illustration of faith-based decision-making, the casting of lots (Acts 1:21-26). In each case, man needed direction from God to know what to do. In each case, God told them only what they needed to hear for their situation.
This is "Visioning" as SDG practices it today. We do not have answers for what you should do in your congregation, but we know that God has given us a way to find out. We call this Scripture-based process "Visioning".
